There is a Difference

Psalm 23

The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want…

Good morning Zebras,

Yesterday my pastor started a sermon series on the Twenty-Third Psalm.

To be honest I have never really understood why everyone loved this psalm so much. Nor could I understand why we always read it at funerals.

David writes about The Valley of the Shadow of Death, but to me a person who has died has already passed through that valley to the other side. And although I have often heard it read at funerals I have never heard it explained. Or maybe they explained it and I didn’t understand.

Yesterday I realized the reason I have never understood it was because I didn’t have a heart like David’s.

David knew his God.

He knew his God was good and powerful. He knew he could trust Him to take care of him. He knew that God would protect him and guide him. He knew that no matter what happened God was in charge and watching over Him. And it gave him great comfort.

But that never comforted me.

Knowing God is in charge and taking care of me was not comforting because it was only head knowledge. David had lived it, I had only heard about it.

And there is a huge difference.

When you know about God you worry, when you know God you can relax. Because when you really know who God is and what He is capable of doing, worrying is unnecessary because God, the creator of the universe who holds everything in His hand, has promised to take care of you.

And that is incredibly comforting.

Why Zebras?

In the summer of 2008 I was looking at a herd of zebras in a wild animal park and commented to my son that I didn’t understand why the lions didn’t just eat the zebras because their markings make them so obvious. He told me that the opposite was actually true. God has marked zebras so when they hang together in a herd, their stripes create the illusion they are one large animal and therefore too big to attack. It is the lone zebra that is usually eaten. The same is true of Christians; we must hang together and encourage each other to fight off the lions. The lone Christian is easy prey.

1 Peter 5:8
Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.

Therefore:

Zebras was started to encourage women who desire to follow the Lord Jesus Christ, who want their lives to be transformed to honor God and who are willing to be “zebras” in a world of “horses”. Zebras exists to reassure you that you are not alone and that God has called you to be peculiar. As a peculiar person you should look different than the world

Romans 12:2
Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.

Zebras can stimulate healthy growth in the spiritual lives of the women in your church too.
