Welcome to the herd!
And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds. Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching. Hebrews 10:24-25

Good morning Zebras,
Today is the last day of 2017. Tomorrow is the day many
people like to make resolutions to live “better” next year. It is not a biblically based tradition, and I
have found it to be more harmful than helpful.
The Bible is very clear that we should not lightly make
promises to God.
Numbers 30:1–2 Moses said to the heads of the tribes of
Israel: “This is what the Lord
commands: When a man makes a vow to the Lord or takes an oath to obligate
himself by a pledge, he must not break his word but must do everything he said.
Ecclesiastes 5:4–5 When you make a vow to God, do not delay
in fulfilling it. He has no pleasure in
fools; fulfill your vow. It is better
not to vow than to make a vow and not fulfill it.
Deuteronomy 23:21–23 If you make a vow to the Lord your God, do not be slow to pay it,
for the Lord your God will
certainly demand it of you and you will be guilty of sin. But if you refrain from making a vow, you will
not be guilty. Whatever your lips utter
you must be sure to do, because you made your vow freely to the Lord your God with your own mouth.
I know these are all Old Testament verses, but God hasn’t changed. Here is what Jesus had to say about making
oaths.
Matthew 5:33–37 “Again, you have heard that it was said to
the people long ago, ‘Do not break your oath, but keep the oaths you have made
to the Lord.’ But I tell you, Do not
swear at all: either by heaven, for it is God’s throne; or by the earth, for it
is his footstool; or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the Great King. And do not swear by your head, for you cannot
make even one hair white or black. Simply
let your ‘Yes’ be ‘Yes,’ and your ‘No,’ ‘No’; anything beyond this comes from
the evil one.
We are God’s people.
Our word should be our bond. We
shouldn’t be making oaths lightly.
James 5:12 Above all, my brothers, do not swear—not by
heaven or by earth or by anything else. Let
your “Yes” be yes, and your “No,” no, or you will be condemned.
I love you Zebras, please do not make any grand resolutions
this year, they only take the emphasis off God and put it on you.
Instead consider spending today in prayer asking God what
changes He would like you to make and
then wake up tomorrow resolved to yield to His Spirit.
Love,
Jill
