Don't Look Back

Philippians 3:12-14 (NLT)
I don’t mean to say that I have already achieved these things or that I have already reached perfection. But I press on to possess that perfection for which Christ Jesus first possessed me. No, dear brothers and sisters, I have not achieved it, but I focus on this one thing: Forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead, I press on to reach the end of the race and receive the heavenly prize for which God, through Christ Jesus, is calling us.

Good morning ladies,

I have a really busy day ahead of me, but I didn’t want to skip sending you an e-mail so I decided I would cheat. I would send you an old e-mail, probably one you had forgotten. I mean cartoonists rerun their comic strips all the time.

But as I was looking through the old e-mails, I realized that none of them were suitable. They were too personal to my life on the day that they were written.

And then these verses came to mind.

“Jill,” God said, “you are not to look back at what I taught you yesterday, nor are you to think about what I am going to teach you tomorrow, you are to get up this day and learn what I have for you today. And then go share it with the Zebras.”

So ladies, here is your encouragement for the day; God has something for you to learn today, something that He wants to say to you specifically, but you will never know what it is unless you spend time in His word and prayer.

Why Zebras?

In the summer of 2008 I was looking at a herd of zebras in a wild animal park and commented to my son that I didn’t understand why the lions didn’t just eat the zebras because their markings make them so obvious. He told me that the opposite was actually true. God has marked zebras so when they hang together in a herd, their stripes create the illusion they are one large animal and therefore too big to attack. It is the lone zebra that is usually eaten. The same is true of Christians; we must hang together and encourage each other to fight off the lions. The lone Christian is easy prey.

1 Peter 5:8
Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.

Therefore:

Zebras was started to encourage women who desire to follow the Lord Jesus Christ, who want their lives to be transformed to honor God and who are willing to be “zebras” in a world of “horses”. Zebras exists to reassure you that you are not alone and that God has called you to be peculiar. As a peculiar person you should look different than the world

Romans 12:2
Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.

Zebras can stimulate healthy growth in the spiritual lives of the women in your church too. I was with you in the beginning meetings of the herd and watched it evolve into a place where we as sisters in Christ could share our burdens without judgment.
